07/02/2008 - Hartnell Students Win Award at International ROV Competition
06/29/2008 - Blog #3:
06/28/2008 - Blog #3: Things Wrap Up at the ROV Competition
The last of the competitors wrapped up their in-pool tasks by noon today, and their were both cheers and disappointments. Aberdeen, Scotland's Bridge of Don Academy tried to repair the unpleasant surprise yesterday of finding their TV camera wasn't compatible with U.S. standards--the result being the ROV operator had only a tiny screen set within the laptop screen. But an trip to Radio Shack last night didn't solve the problem and they struggled with the same problem in their final heat. Clapstop Community College had neither a team name nor a t-shirt, and they had a disappointing opening in the first heat yesterday--a mere 80 points, but they more than made up for it today, scoring 210 points! For those who don't know, points are accumulated in two ways: 200 for a tech report, poster and verbal presentation before judges and 200 for the in-water tasks with additional points earned for every minute under 15 minutes it takes to complete the in-water event. the total score can be 400, but the competitors only know what their in-water-task score is. They won't know their "engineering" score (the presentation, poster, and tech report) until tonight when the winners are announced. I'll let you know the results tomorrow. It's was great to see the event, and I'd like to point out that a team from Connecticut that didn't win their regional finals showed up anyway to check out the ROVs and talk to other teams. They get to go back home with suntans and some great ideas for next year. It was also gratifying to stop students and parents in their tracks as they walked by the MTS table and I said, "We have scholarships!" Who's not interested in scholarships? It's been great talking to all who stopped by and it was great to see all the MTS member companies involved--Oceaneering, VideoRay, DeepSea Power and Light, Subsea 7 (sorry if I missed anyone). I especially enjoyed meeting the Harnell College team, whose members just started an MTS student chapter with Monterey Penninsula College, and our MTS member from Vladivostok, Russia. We are international! --Susan Branting, communications manager, still in sunny California.
06/27/2008 - Blog #2: The Competitors Heat Up at the International ROV Competition
The competition heated up under the eternal California sunshine today—Friday—the first day of actual competition. My inside source in the two-time-winning Eastern Edge team (Newfoundland) put their time in the two heats they completed today at 2 min, 40 sec followed by 2 min, 20 sec. Hard to beat, but I'm told the team eschewed robotic arms and such and designed an ROV that was able to complete the three tasks in one maneuver--now that's thinking! (Thanks, Jake, for the info.) But their still sweating last year's winning Jesuit High from Carmichael, Calif. A big team with a lot of talent. I met members of the Russian team today, but it looks like the Iranians didn't make it. It's hard to follow the action, which takes place underwater, natch, but Peter Weber of DeepSea Power and Light has set up six underwater camers to catch the action. Hope to get a portion of the video to post later. I've also got lots of pictures but no way to download them. I asked Drew Michel, ROV Committee chair, if professionals ever came away with ideas from these imaginative students and he replied, "No, we come away with the students." Meaning, this competition is a great resources for tagging future ROV operators. I've had a few students stop by the MTS booth and wax eloquent about their enthusiasm for ROVs and technology. Oceaneering International has been passing out information and more than a few students seem very interested. Tomorrow is the final day of competition and the awards dinner. Stay tuned. --Susan Branting, communications manager, still lucky to be in southern California
