MTS IIT, Madras Student Section Convenes Inaugural “MTS TechSym 2020”
From February 29 – March 1, 2020, MTS’ Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras Student Section held its first ever “MTS TechSym 2020”, a two-day, student organized national symposium designed to accelerate discoveries in maritime and ocean science.
The theme for this first-of-its-kind gathering was “Advances in Research and Development, Innovation, and the Utilization of Technology within Ocean and Marine Systems”.
Among the invited speakers was MTS India Chairman Dr. R. Venkatesan who welcomed the attendees and described both the history and evolution of the MTS India section as well as the significance of having this event in the run-up to the 2022 Oceans Conference and Exhibition. Also speaking was Dr. S. A. Sannasiraj Sir, Faculty Advisor, IIT Madras MTS Student section who, along with Dr. Venkatesan, played the key role in mentoring the students to host this national “TechSym;” the first of it’s kind in the world.
Keynote addresses were delivered by Mr. S. Ranganathan, Vice President for L&T Defense and Dr. Monika Aggarwal, Professor at CARE, IIT Delhi. Ranganathan stressed the importance of coastal security, trade, and innovation while protecting the marine environment and aquatic life. Aggarwal focused on the challenges presented by underwater communication.
The event featured numerous other speakers including Dr. K. Murali of the Department of Ocean Engineering, IIT Madras and Dr. Bhaskar Ramamurthy, Director, IIT Madras; breakout sessions; awards; lab visits; posters; papers; a science tech expo; and panel discussions on topics ranging from high-precision global navigation satellite systems to real time simulations in offshore oil and gas exploration.
