The mission of the Marine Geodetic Information Systems Committee is to promote and support research for improved geodetic definition(s) and accurate marine positioning with emphasis on bathymetry, sub-surface and sea floor, Marine Information System (MIS), and geodetic aspects of the law of the sea. It also seeks to provide: support in defining and establishing the specific geodetic positioning for special scientific, industrial, territorial boundaries, coastal and offshore surveys, and tsunami signal; support with geodetic definition’s, interpretation, identification, and survey specifications for marine boundaries; promotion of the extension of 4-D geodesy to the sea floor; and consultation for practical and realizable solutions for all types of marine positioning with innovation and vision.
National Oceanic and Admospheric Administration
Zilkoski has a bachelor of science degree in forest engineering from the College of Environmental Science and Forestry at Syracuse University and an master of science in geodetic science from Ohio State University. He has been employed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) since 1974, where he held a number of positions. In 2006, he was selected as director, National Geodetic Survey (NGS). Under his leadership, NGS has developed and transferred new positioning technologies, such as the Shallow Water Positioning System (SWaPS), for monitoring underwater features, GPS-equipped buoys, the incorporation of geodetic data and procedures into restoration projects for determining accurate elevation models, and the use of new geodetic and remote sensing technology, such as GPS, LIDAR and IFSAR, to generate shoreline and other coastal information for managers. In 2006, he was also designated NOAA Integrated Ocean Observing System project manager.
