Message from the President - May 2023

Recap from OTC 2023

MTS is proud of the many members in Houston who contribute to the success of OTC. The MTS Board of Directors and many of our staff were thrilled to host them at our Member Reception. It was a pleasure to meet some of our newest members and see many familiar faces.

OTC 2023 hosted more than 1,300 companies, welcoming more than 31,000 participants from 104 countries. Attendance increased by 30 percent from last year's conference. The technical program consisted of 49 sessions, including 25 executive dialogues and keynote speakers, 14 panels, five networking events and six countries showcased through the Around the World Series.

While 2023 is barely over, please note that OTC 2024 will take place May 6-9 at NRG Center in Houston, TX. We hope to see you there!

May Board Meeting

AT OTC, the MTS Board convened for 1.5 days. In addition to the usual requirements of society governance we also undertook significant strategic planning. We examined new partnerships, considered how we might increase member value, and collaborated to envision a future MTS as a key leader in the blue economy. I am most appreciative to my fellow board members for sharing their time and talent.

MATE ROV World Championship

The approaching MATE ROV World Championship has the entire MTS crew buzzing with excitement! The championship will be held in Longmont, Colorado, next month, and Susan Hunt (President-Elect) and I are excited to attend.

Each year, the MATE ROV Competition gives students brand-new mission tasks inspired by real-world use cases for marine technology. For 2023 the competition is spotlighting the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and motivating the international community to support environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives to build a sustainable future for our oceans. OCEANS Limerick

I'm personally looking forward to OCEANS Limerick, also in June. The OCEANS conference is a signature event for MTS and our partner, the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (OES). We operate in a global blue economy, and it's crucial to interact with individuals and organizations outside of North America to comprehend the full range of this industry.

On Tuesday, June 8th from 12:30-14:00, MTS Women Leadership in Marine Technology and Science will be hosting a lunch and panel on Women and the Ocean Decade. To attend, RSVP here

Wednesday morning will start with an MTS Early Career Ocean Professionals networking breakfast and panel from 7:30-9:00. Come and enjoy a breakfast and panel session where you will have the opportunity to hear from veterans in the ocean engineering sector and ask questions about career opportunities, professional development, and how to best navigate your early career stage in a casual, informal setting. To attend, RSVP here

If you plan to visit the exhibition hall, make sure to stop by our booth (49-51) and say hello!

MTS Celebrates 60 Years

As some of you may already know, this year marks 60 years for the society! Originally formed on June 12, 1963, MTS stands stronger than ever six decades later. In addition to some members who have been with us since those early days, our membership today includes young, innovative professionals launching their careers, and students just embarking on their journeys.

MTS will be showcasing people and technology from the previous six decades as part of a "Six Decades of Making Waves" campaign to commemorate this great milestone. There will be more information coming soon!
