Company Update

The Webb Research Slocum glider team successfully launched new initiatives in Q1 and Q2 including:

  • The Slocum Sentinel Glider, which was launched in March 2024 at Oceanology International London, expands the capabilities and endurance of the vehicle by building on the technology of the Slocum G3 Glider. The Slocum Sentinel Glider scales the standard Slocum Glider through an increased diameter and length - 13 inches in diameter and over 8 feet long. This expanded size allows the Sentinel to hold over 3.5 times as many lithium primary batteries as the standard Slocum Glider and to accommodate up to eight different sensor or hardware integrations. The Sentinel is the world's fastest glider - it's buoyancy engine is large enough to deal with drastic density changes in the water column, and its thrusters give it the ability to stay on track in strong currents or other difficult ocean conditions.
  • Rutgers University and Teledyne Webb Research unveiled The Sentinel Mission, which marks the beginning of an ambitious journey as Teledyne's Slocum Sentinel Glider, "Redwing," (Research & Education Doug Webb Inter-National Glider) prepares for a historic round-the-world flight later this year.

Benthos

In partnership with Sea Mammal Education Learning Technology Society (SMELTS), Benthos announced the integration of Teledyne's acoustic modern technology and the new Acoustic Trigger feature, which will enable a safer and more efficient fishing experience. Extensively tested through a series of sea trials over the past several years, this technology has proven its potential to positively impact the lobster and crab fishing industries.
