September 2024 Message from the President

Midyear Reflections: Celebrating Community, Growth, and Leadership

I am writing this message from Halifax, Nova Scotia. As fall colors begin to appear in the Northeast USA and Atlantic Canada, I would like to reflect on recent MTS activities that highlight our vibrant society. First, our participation in OCEANS Halifax was an undeniable success. It was a privilege to connect with so many members of our global community. With over 1,500 attendees from over 36 countries, the value of MTS as a hub for international collaboration and networking was on full display. A heartfelt thank you to our gracious hosts in Halifax for setting the stage for such meaningful conversations and partnerships.

In tandem with OCEANS, we also held our online Annual Meeting, where I had the honor or sharing positive news about MTS's growth. Our membership continues to rise, and thanks to diverse funding streams, our financial health is stronger than ever. I am also pleased to report that the integration of the MATE ROV Competition into the MTS family has been a great success, reinforcing our commitment to the next generation of marine technologists. If you missed the meeting you can see a recording online, by logging onto your member profile.

Both events provided the perfect backdrop to recognize the exceptional achievements of our MTS award winners. At both the annual meeting and OCEANS I was pleased, on behalf of our members, to honor these individuals whose contributions continue to advance marine technology and innovation. I remarked to the audience at OCEANS that our award winners are both legends and emerging rock stars. Our awards program is designed to acknowledge individuals, and organizations, at diverse stages of growth. Celebrating their work is a reminder of the caliber of talent within our society.

Lastly, I'm proud to note that we had a strongly supported Board of Directors Election, showcasing the enthusiasm of our members. Congratulations to our new board members, and a sincere thank you to outgoing leaders Dr. Richard Crout (VP of Section Affairs) and Zdenka Willis (Past President), whose dedication has left a lasting mark on MTS.

Thank you for all your continued support and commitment to MTS. I look forward to great strides we'll take together in the coming months.

Justin Manley
President, MTS
