January 2026: Message from Leadership

New Energy and Shared Momentum in 2026

As we step into a new year, one thing is immediately clear: 2026 is starting with momentum. The weeks ahead will bring some of the most important global convenings for our community, and they reflect exactly what MTS exists to do – connect people, ideas, and technologies across disciplines and sectors.

Over the next month, many of you will be engaging at the Ocean Sciences Meeting in GlasgowOceanology International in London, or the Underwater Robotics TechSurge in India. Each of these gatherings plays a distinct role in advancing our field – from foundational ocean science and observing systems, to applied technology, to regionally grounded innovation with global relevance. Together, they underscore the breadth of the marine technology ecosystem and the value of showing up – to share work, learn from peers, build partnerships, and map out what comes next.

These early year events also set the tone for 2026: a year focused on forward motion, practical collaboration, and expanding opportunity. Whether you are presenting research, showcasing new technologyor mentoring students (perhaps by encouraging them to apply for an MTS scholarship), I invite you to lean into these moments. MTS is strongest when our members are visible, engaged, and shaping the conversations that matter.

I also want to take a moment to recognize the top-of-year leadership transitions on the MTS Board of Directors. We are delighted to welcome Dr. Anna Pfeiffer-Herbert, Vice President of Education and Carl Gouldman, Vice President of Government & Public Affairs, as new members of the Board Anna is a respected leader in education and workforce development – areas that are central to MTS’s mission and long-term impact. Carl brings deep experience at the intersection of marine technology, policy, and public sector engagement.

Please also join me in congratulating David Golden, Vice President of MATE, as he begins a new term supporting the continued growth and global reach of the MATE ROV Competition, one of MTS’s flagship workforce development programs. At the same time, I want to extend our sincere thanks to Jerry Miller and Josh Kohut as they conclude their service on the Board. Jerry’s leadership as Vice President of Government & Public Affairs and Josh’s work as Vice President of Education have helped strengthen MTS during an important period of growth and transition, and we are grateful for the insight, dedication, and care they have given to this community.

I also want to share my thanks and appreciation to Debbi Kill, long-time MTS board member and MATE volunteeras she steps away from her board role as VP Budget and Finance. Her decades of volunteer service have made a lasting and positive impact on MTS, and she leaves with MTS finances in a strong and stable position. As provided by our by-laws, the board will appoint an interim successor to Debbi in the coming weeks.

A new year always brings fresh perspective – but it also builds on what came before. MTS enters 2026 as a growing, increasingly connected platform for the global marine technology community. From convenings and competitions to workforce development and innovation pathways, our work continues to be guided by one core goal: enabling our members to do their best work and amplifying the collective impact of this united community.

Thank you for being part of MTS, and for the many ways you contribute – through your expertise, leadership, and willingness to engage. I look forward to connecting with many of you in the months ahead as we explore new horizons together.

Warm regards,
