MTS Member Spotlight: Yokogawa Fluid Imaging Technologies
At Yokogawa Fluid Imaging Technologies, we develop and manufacture FlowCam® instruments, advanced flow imaging microscopes that combine high-resolution imaging with rapid analysis to identify and count microscopic aquatic organisms.

Caption: FlowCam provides a rapid, accurate, and easy-to-use alternative to manual microscopy for monitoring phytoplankton biovolume and community composition as well as detecting potentially harmful cyanobacteria.
From marine waters to coastal estuaries and freshwater lakes, scientists worldwide use FlowCam to monitor plankton populations, track ecosystem health, and respond quickly to emerging environmental threats.

FlowCam at Skidaway Institute of Oceanography
A mysterious crash in an oyster hatchery along the Georgia coast led researchers at Skidaway Institute of Oceanography to investigate the cause and discover the risks of harmful algal blooms (HABs) from species like Akashiwo sanguinea.

Caption: FlowCam images of Akashiwo sanguinea sorted by area-based diameter. Quantitation and image quality are two key characteristics that make FlowCam an important tool for monitoring HABs.
Using FlowCam, they have been able to rapidly identify and quantify HAB species from live samples - without the delays and limitations of traditional microscopy. This real-time insight helps inform both research and practical decision-making for coastal resource managers.

Driving Broader Impact in Environmental Monitoring
FlowCam is more than just a tool for data collection—it is a scalable solution for researchers and agencies working to protect ecosystems and communities from the growing threat of harmful algal blooms. By accelerating phytoplankton identification, FlowCam helps teams focus resources where they are needed most.
