April 2026 Message from Leadership

Power of Member Community – Governance & Stewardship

At the heart of MTS is something far more powerful than any single program, event, or initiative — it’s our member community.

Every advancement we make as an organization is rooted in the collective expertise, curiosity, and leadership of our members. From technical innovation to global collaboration, it is this shared commitment that continues to shape both MTS and the broader marine technology community.

As we continue through 2026, I'm reminded that the strength of MTS governance comes directly from the engagement of our members. With Board elections on the horizon, your voice and participation play a critical role in shaping the future of our Society. The direction of MTS is guided not only by those who serve, but by those who engage — through voting, volunteering, and stepping forward to lead.

Leadership across MTS is not centralized; it shows wherever our members see opportunity and take action.

We’re seeing this in real time through committee-driven initiatives and member-led efforts shaping critical conversations in areas such as offshore renewables and environmental DNA (eDNA). Upcoming events like the Offshore Innovation Exchange Mini TechSurge and Tech Café this June and the Global eDNA Conference this October reflect how our members are actively defining where those conversations go next.

This leadership extends across the full breadth of our community, from technical gatherings like the bi-annual Buoy Workshop, to regional events like the Houston Section’s Annual BBQ Fundraiser, and specialized forums such as the upcoming DP Conference. Each reflects a different kind of leadership, shaped by the priorities, expertise, and initiative of our members.

Recognition is also a vital part of stewardship. With award nominations now open, we have an opportunity to celebrate the individuals who are driving impact across disciplines and career stages. Taking the time to nominate a colleague or peer is one of the most meaningful ways we can uplift excellence within our community, and ensure that those contributions are seen, valued, and remembered.

Importantly, the impact of member leadership does not stop at the individual level. It creates a ripple effect, supporting early career professionals, strengthening regional communities, and advancing critical domains within marine technology. When members lead, they don’t just move projects forward — they help shape the future workforce and inspire the next generation.

MTS has always been where leadership is not defined by title, but by action. As new opportunities emerge, we encourage you to get involved, bring forward ideas, and help define what comes next.

Susan Hunt

MTS President
