Student Innovators Rise to the Challenge at the 2026 MATE ROV Competition World Championship
Held June 25-27 in St. John’s, the world championship brought together 86 student teams from around the world to showcase engineering excellence, teamwork, and innovation while tackling real-world ocean technology challenges. Hosted by the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University and the National Research Council Canada (NRC), this year’s event marked the 24th annual MATE ROV Competition World Championship.
Centered around the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences (2025-2034), this year’s competition challenged teams to complete missions inspired by work in some of the world’s most demanding marine environments. Teams mapped and documented cold-water coral ecosystems, deployed and serviced subsea monitoring technologies, supported offshore energy infrastructure, and collected data beneath Arctic ice.
For the first time in MATE ROV Competition history, students took their ROVs into saltwater as part of the Bonus Mission at The Launch, the Fisheries and Marine Institute’s marine base in Holyrood. Following mission runs in the Fisheries and Marine Institute’s 1.7-million-litre Flume Tank, teams tested their vehicles in real marine conditions—adding another layer of technical challenge while giving students an authentic glimpse into the environments where professional ROVs operate every day.
“The level of innovation, professionalism, and perseverance displayed by these students continues to raise the bar each year,” said Jill Zande, Executive Director of MATE at the Marine Technology Society. “By solving authentic engineering challenges in world-class facilities, students are developing the technical and professional skills needed to become the next generation of engineers, technologists, and innovators. St. John’s provided an incredible backdrop for showcasing what’s possible when education and industry come together.”
Beyond the mission tasks, teams demonstrated the full range of skills required in the marine technology industry by operating as simulated ROV companies. In addition to piloting their vehicles, students produced technical documentation, delivered engineering presentations, created marketing displays, managed project budgets, and collaborated with industry professionals throughout the week.

About the MATE ROV Competition
Established with funding from the National Science Foundation at Monterey Peninsula College in 1997, the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center worked with the Marine Technology Society’s ROV Committee to create the MATE ROV Competition. The first event kicked off in 2001. Fifteen years later, MATE Inspiration for Innovation (MATE II) incorporated in the state of California as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. MATE II was founded in 2016 to support and sustain ongoing education activities initiated at the MATE Center. During July 2023, MATE II initiated the next phase of its journey by becoming an integral part of the Marine Technology Society’s lineup of program offerings. Through this partnership, MATE and MTS have fostered connection and bridged the gap between today’s professionals and future innovators in marine technology.
