MTS Puget Sound Section Meeting: Next-Gen Stewardship of Urban Sea Systems
Join the MTS Puget Sound Section for their November meeting, which will include a presentation by Professor John R. Delaney of the University of Washington on Next-Gen Stewardship of Urban Sea Systems. Urban Sea Systems are complex, interconnected coastal regions that include port cities, watersheds, and adjacent ocean zones. They are vital to global trade, ecological health, and national security. These systems face mounting pressures from pollution, climate change, and natural and human-made disasters, making them hotspots of environmental and social vulnerability. To improve resilience and governance of these vital areas, Prof. Delaney and Professor H. Gary Greene (of San Jose State University, CA) propose next-generation stewardship strategies that integrate emerging technologies like digital twins, serious gaming, and scenario planning. Effective management requires collaboration among experts and stakeholders to model and balance energy, mass, capital, and human engagement across diverse subsystems. Ultimately, the goal is to foster sustainable, adaptive oversight that enhances economic vitality, ecological integrity, and public well-being in over 200 such systems worldwide. Professor Delaney is a Professor of Oceanography and holds the Jerome M. Paros Endowed Chair in Sensor Networks at the University of Washington. Prof. Delaney led the University of Washington team of scientists and engineers who designed and built the first U.S. Regional Cabled Ocean Observatory within the National Science Foundation's Ocean Observatories Initiative, completed in 2014. Free for students, $15 for MTS Members, $25 for non-MTS Members. Dinner will be served. Date: November 20, 2025, Thursday Click here to register. |
