MTS Puget Sound Section End of Season BBQ & Presentation - A Revolution in Subsea Watercraft: Efficiency Test Results for a New Class of Robotic Fish or "Phish"

The MTS Puget Sound Section and MTS University of Washington Student Section invite you to join them for a BBQ before breaking for the summer months! A presentation will be given by Martin Garthwaite, Anne Marie Zink and Kevin (Xianzhi) Bi regarding their work to evaluate efficiency of a minimally actuated robotic fish or "Phish" which has been under development by Martin since 2009. This past Winter Term, Professor Seroy allowed Martin to offer testing its efficiency as an Oceans 462B project and Anne and Kevin agreed to take it on. Their results from Winter and Spring terms were very good and suggest that this new technology may be able to perform a wide range of subsea services. This presentation will touch on the previous state-of-the-art for robotic fish, will discuss how this Phish operates, how efficiency was tested, will present test results comparing the Phish to propeller-driven systems and to previous robotic fish, and will provide a discussion of services different Phish may perform, including imaging cables on the seafloor, interacting with real fish, measuring temperature, salinity, and pH, hauling barges, and generating power in rivers with reduced fish mortality. The Phish and a human-powered research platform which lead to the Phish will be on-hand for inspection.

Free for students, $15 for MTS members, $25 for non-members.
