MTS San Diego Section: Cheers Oceaneers

Category: In-Person Event
Scaling Phytoplankton Observations and Participatory Science at the Ends of the Earth Join the MTS San Diego Section for Cheers Oceaneers, our monthly happy hour hosted in collaboration with the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society and TMA BlueTech™. Connect with fellow experts for engaging conversations about ocean science, engineering, the blue economy, and more! This month's happy hour will feature a presentation from Biological Oceanographer and Executive Director, Dr. Allison Cusick, about how she is reimagining the ocean data pipeline by transforming global sea-going travelers into an active network of climate data collectors. Driven by a vision to scale oceanographic data collection and bring science directly to the public, Allison launched a new 501(c)(3) non-profit, Plankton Base. This venture builds directly on the 9-year operational legacy of FjordPhyto, a citizen science program she co-founded and manages. Holding a Scripps PhD, a StartBlue alumnus with a MicroMBA, and running her own consulting LLC, Allison bridges high-level marine research with expedition tourism and participatory science leadership. Come discover how she is expanding this proven framework to build public trust with hands-on engagement and scaling global ocean stewardship. Her work solves critical data gaps at the base of the marine food web—powered by phytoplankton, the unsung heroes and microscopic engines running our planet *** This month, we will be at Quantum Brewing again, a cool science-themed brewery founded by a biochemist. No ticket required, but please order something for yourself from the brewery. Please grab a bite from a nearby restaurant, which is okay to bring into the brewery per the owner. The food and drinks are not being funded by the hosts. Please open your own tab. Date: June 10th, 2026, Wednesday Click here to register |
