Currents News Guidelines

MTS is interested in including the activities of any sections or committees. These would include meetings, speakers, site visits, community involvement, competitions, etc.

Article content

Do not be concerned about the length of an article – it is more important to include all the details. If the article is too long or too detailed, the editor will review, make any edits and return to the submitter for review. It’s always better to have too much than too little. Use whatever length is necessary to tell the story.

- Please be sure to include the basic who, what, when, where and why of the event.

- Also include any names of titles of speakers, site visit coordinators, etc. Please be sure they are correctly spelled, as the editor will have minimal opportunity to verify.

- Quotes are always good, even if, for example, it’s a quote thanking someone for coordinating an event, or speaking, etc. Please be sure to identify the speaker and their position/title. In student section stories we often use Currents to publically thank a company or person for helping out a section, or conducting a site visit.

- If there is another upcoming event you would like mentioned in Currents, please be sure to include the information.

Pictures

Pictures can tell a story, and even if you conduct an event that there is very little to promote, often Currents will run a photo with just a long caption, so don't ignore small events. Just take a few pictures.

Pictures must print at a 300 dpi resolution, because Currents is a print publication. Online, for example, only requires 72 dpi to be acceptable. In a printed publication, this would be a blurred/pixelated blob.

Set cameras to either high resolution if available, or the largest format available. Be cautious, however, as sometimes the largest format will give you a blurry image, and you may have to set it back one step. Again, it all depends on your camera. Many of the smart phones now give you a high-resolution image. Anytime you have a question, please feel free to take a test image prior to the event and send it to mtsoffice@mtsociety.org. We can check the resolution for you in advance.

Do not ‘save down’ your images or crop before emailing. This changes the resolution. A large format picture may be as large as 59 inches by 39 inches but only 72 dpi! It will likely be 2+ MB. However sending the image at this size when converted to 300 dpi causes the image size to drop to 14 x 9. At this point, the picture can be cropped and re-sized if needed for publication. This process allows a tight close-up of the people or product.
