Techno-economic considerations for deep-sea mining

(April 18, 2023)

In the current era, a remarkable surge has been witnessed in the development of cutting-edge technologies to mine the abundantly available deep-sea mineral resources. This increase in tech development is accompanied by a parallel effort to implement a balanced and secure approach through the framing of robust regulations. The prospect of deep-sea minerals as a viable substitute for critical industrial and domestic materials, as well as a source for transitioning to green energy, has caught the attention of the world. In this presentation we will delve into the various techno-economic considerations that are essential for deep-sea mining. We will explore ways to optimize the mining rate, and evaluate the multitude of associated parameters.

Walter Munk Commemorative Lecture: Mobula Conservation. Mobilizing Women.

(November 16, 2022)

Marta D. Palacios is currently completing a PhD at CICIMAR in Mexico. She studies the ecology of Munk’s devil rays, which form impressive aggregations of thousands of individuals, making them extremely vulnerable to anthropogenic threats in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.

Palacios works with artisanal fishermen, national agencies, and local people to turn the tide for this emblematic species. Teaming up with local fishermen, they are discovering critical habitats such as nursery areas, and mating and pupping grounds in the Gulf of California. Palacios is beginning to understand one of the biggest migrations in the ocean.

During this time, she has co-created Mobula Conservation, a female research group that specializes in mobula rays, fisheries, and quantitative ecology to lead the conservation of these species in the Eastern Tropical Pacific

Simplify Underwater Sensing with Sofar Ocean's Spotter Buoy and Smart Mooring

(November 9, 2022)

Collecting real-time ocean data at the surface is hard. Collecting real-time ocean data beneath the surface is even harder. Sofar Ocean’s Spotter buoy and Smart Mooring offer a game-changing subsurface solution that breaks down the barriers of cost and complexity that traditionally make underwater sensing inaccessible. In this webinar, Sofar’s Commercial Business Lead Nevin DiParlo will discuss:

  • How the rapidly deployable Spotter and Smart Mooring enable you to start collecting ocean data quickly
  • How Spotter acts as the “brain” of Smart Mooring, serving as a hub for power, connectivity, and data delivery
  • How Smart Mooring is compatible with Bristlemouth, the full stack marine connectivity standard created by Sofar, DARPA, ONR, and Oceankind. This “USB for the sea” unlocks plug and play customization with other subsurface sensors.

  • Nevin DiParlo, Commercial Business Lead - Sofar Ocean
