Volume 55, Number 3: Introduction to The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) and the Seabed 2030 Initiative

From the guest editors' introduction:

This special issue of the MTSJ is the first in a multi-volume series that will span the next 10 years of the UN Ocean Decade, and is being offered as an open-access issue to increase awareness of the Ocean Decade.

Dr. Vladimr Ryabinin, Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, kicks off this issue with an overview of the Ocean Decade, followed by commentaries from three of the Ocean Decade’s partnering organizations and the roles these organizations will play: Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), and the Marine Technology Society (MTS). Next up is a discussion of one of the most ambitious initiatives in oceanographic history, The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project, which aims to map 100% of the ocean floor by 2030.

The next commentary discusses technological innovations in mapping that will help support the Seabed 2030 Project and the goals of the Ocean Decade. Two submissions from our MTS India Section members follow an Ocean Decade objective to focus on initiatives and ocean technologies by ocean scientists and technologists in India: one discusses technological trends and the significance of essential ocean variables collected by moored observatories; and the other describes a Web-GIS and mobile-based application to enhance safety to the fishing community.

The remainder of this issue comprises 43 "Ocean-Shot" posters: ambitious, transformational research concepts that draw inspiration and expertise from multiple disciplines and fundamentally advance ocean science for sustainable development.

We hope you enjoy the issue, and that it motivates you to learn more about and become involved with the UN Ocean Decade. To celebrate the UN Ocean Decade this issue is available to members and non-members.
