The NCS: A New Frontier for Deep Sea Minerals Exploration - View From an Operator

(November 29, 2023)

Description:

To achieve the International Energy Agency (IEA) net zero goals, we need 6X more minerals and metals than we currently use. Terrestrial ore grades are declining, and the consequences include more energy-intensive extraction, increased waste handling, and greater land use. There is no reason to not investigate the deep sea as an opportunity to fulfill some of the demand in the mineral-intensive energy transition we are moving into. In June 2023, the Norwegian government proposed the opening of approximately 280,000 km² offshore Norway for mineral resource activities. This suggestion has to go through formal approval in parliament before the area can legally be available for industrial activity. Green Minerals was founded in 2020 with a vision to create a marine minerals value chain through partners and affiliations, where Green Minerals explores and operates the licenses. We believe that there will be an opening of areas in the coming years, and we are preparing for a license application during this period. As an important part of this preparation, we are conducting studies within several aspects of the value chain.

Walter Munk Commemorative Lecture

(November 15, 2023)

Description:

Joshua Jones received a PhD in Oceanography in 2020 from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. His research utilizes underwater sound recording and remote sensing to observe marine wildlife and habitats. Josh has worked extensively with Arctic local and indigenous resource managers, leading development of long-term international research partnerships that are community-based and guided principally by Inuit.

Dr. Jones has provided expert testimony and technical reporting to the Nunavut Impact Review Board regarding mining-related shipping impacts on marine mammals in the north Baffin Island region. Josh Jones has co-developed a research internship and technology training program called SeaTech, building mentorship between Alaska Native youth and UC undergraduates and graduate students. He produced and directed the interactive exhibit program, Whales: Voices in the Sea, installed at nine US public aquariums and winning an American Association of Museums MUSE Award in 2005.

Women Leadership in Marine Technology and Science: Women Retention in STEM

(July 12, 2023)

Female undergraduates now outnumber males at American colleges and universities. In 2020, women made up 45 percent of STEM majors, an increase of 10 percent over the previous decade. However, the STEM workforce remains challenging for many women. In 2019 the US Census Bureau data revealed the that only 27 percent of STEM workers were women. This indicates a STEM workplace culture problem. Join us for a discussion on retaining women in the STEM workforce.

Walter Munk Commemorative Lecture: Mobula Conservation. Mobilizing Women.

(November 16, 2022)

Marta D. Palacios is currently completing a PhD at CICIMAR in Mexico. She studies the ecology of Munk’s devil rays, which form impressive aggregations of thousands of individuals, making them extremely vulnerable to anthropogenic threats in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.

Palacios works with artisanal fishermen, national agencies, and local people to turn the tide for this emblematic species. Teaming up with local fishermen, they are discovering critical habitats such as nursery areas, and mating and pupping grounds in the Gulf of California. Palacios is beginning to understand one of the biggest migrations in the ocean.

During this time, she has co-created Mobula Conservation, a female research group that specializes in mobula rays, fisheries, and quantitative ecology to lead the conservation of these species in the Eastern Tropical Pacific

Simplify Underwater Sensing with Sofar Ocean's Spotter Buoy and Smart Mooring

(November 9, 2022)

Collecting real-time ocean data at the surface is hard. Collecting real-time ocean data beneath the surface is even harder. Sofar Ocean’s Spotter buoy and Smart Mooring offer a game-changing subsurface solution that breaks down the barriers of cost and complexity that traditionally make underwater sensing inaccessible. In this webinar, Sofar’s Commercial Business Lead Nevin DiParlo will discuss:

  • How the rapidly deployable Spotter and Smart Mooring enable you to start collecting ocean data quickly
  • How Spotter acts as the “brain” of Smart Mooring, serving as a hub for power, connectivity, and data delivery
  • How Smart Mooring is compatible with Bristlemouth, the full stack marine connectivity standard created by Sofar, DARPA, ONR, and Oceankind. This “USB for the sea” unlocks plug and play customization with other subsurface sensors.
