U.S. Navy RDML Ron Piret, commander of the Naval Meteorology Oceanography Command at Stennis Space Center, will give the keynote address at the Oceans In Action/Port Security Summit on September 1, 2021. RDML Piret, who assumed command of the Naval Meteorology Oceanography Command on June 25, will provide details on this year’s Advanced Naval Technology Exercise (ANTX), with an emphasis on the increased importance of unmanned systems in Navy Oceanography. His talk will also include plans for the future for his command. Results of ANTX tests conducted from 2020-2021 will also be presented.

Laurie Jugan, Mississippi Enterprise for Technology program director, said, “The theme for the year is ‘Smart Ocean’ focusing on support the Chief of Naval Operation's Task Force Ocean initiative aimed at maintaining the Navy's undersea dominance. This is through the ability to understand and exploit the ocean environment by re-invigorating Navy-relevant ocean science, increasing the Navy's capability and capacity to understand and exploit knowledge of the ocean environment, and better leveraging the full range of science and technology development in the United States.” The focus supports the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command mission of defining and applying the physical environment, from the bottom of the ocean to the stars, to ensure that the US Navy has the freedom of action to deter aggression, maintain freedom of the seas and win wars.

As part of the Oceans in Action/Port Security Summit, attendees will be shuttled to the Port of Gulfport for a variety of activities. Exhibits and posters will highlight the results of the ANTX tests conducted throughout the year, with some in-water demonstrations of the systems tested. Other table exhibits will include specifics on systems deployed out of the Stennis-based Naval Oceanographic Office, as well as ocean research programs being conducted out of the University of Southern Mississippi’s Marine Research Center (MRC). Tours of the MRC and the port itself will also be provided.
