This June, the Marine Technology Society (MTS) and the Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) launched the Marine Technologist Certification program. In 2020, the Marine Technology Society (MTS) and the Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) entered into a pilot program to offer the Chartered Marine Technologist (CMarTech), in an effort to provide members with an opportunity to advance their professional profile through certification. Now, all MTS and SUT members have the opportunity to apply for Marine Technologist Certification through your own professional society - at all three levels of certification: Chartered Marine Technologist (CMarTech), Registered Marine Technologist (RMarTech), and Marine Technician (MarTech).

What is Marine Technology Certification?
The Chartered Marine Technologist (CMarTech), Registered Marine Technologist (RMarTech), and Marine Technician (MarTech) are registered by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science, and Technology (IMarEST), which has a Royal Charter from the United Kingdom, to award suitably qualified and experienced applicants Marine Technologist Registration. MTS and SUT have been granted a license from the IMarEST to award these qualifications to candidates applying through our Societies.

CMarTech, RMarTech, and MarTech are professionals who harness, exploit, manage, use, or apply marine technology in the pursuit of wealth creation and/or the provision of services in the marine sector. They are characterized by their ability to deal with complex issues, both systematically and creatively and can make sound judgments in the absence of complete data to develop solutions to problems and communicate their conclusions clearly to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

Marine Scientist Certification Coming in this Fall
The Chartered Marine Scientist (CMarSci) and Registered Marine Scientist (RMarSci) are registered by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science, and Technology (IMarEST), which has a Royal Charter from the United Kingdom, to award suitably qualified and experienced applicants Marine Scientist Registration (certification). CMarSci and RMarSci are professional scientists, who harness, exploit, manage, use or apply marine science in the pursuit of knowledge, understanding of the marine environment, wealth creation and/or the provision of services in the marine sector. They demonstrate effective leadership, using their specialist knowledge and broader scientific understanding to develop and improve the application of science and technology by scoping, planning, and managing multifaceted projects. CMarSci and RMarSci reflect the wide variety of sciences and their practice, recognizing high levels of skill and experience, independent of discipline. MTS and SUT plan to launch the CMarSci and RMarSci certifications in the fall of 2021.

MTS and SUT are proud of the CMarTech candidates who have completed the program. Congratulations!

Mike Jugan, CMarTech
Michael graduated from Old Dominion University, Norfolk Virginia in 1982 with a Master of Science Degree in Oceanography.  He worked for the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) at Stennis Space Center, MS for 35 years.  Michael worked in a number of different positions from survey watch stander to Lead Oceanographer on Naval research vessels, to serving as a Department Director.   As Department Director, Michael was responsible for creating environmental products within the littoral and riverine battlespace supporting world-wide Naval operations.  He is currently retired from Naval Civil Service and continues to attend MTS Conferences, served on the Technical Program Committee for Global OCEANS 2020 and is a member of the Local Organizing Committee for OCEANS 2023 in Biloxi, MS.

Jill Zande, CMarTech

Jill Zande is the President/Executive Director of MATE Inspiration for Innovation and the Associate Director of the MATE Center. Highlights of her 22 years with MATE include establishing the global ROV (remotely operated vehicle) student competition and coordinating the development of MATE’s Underwater Robotics: Science, Design & Fabrication textbook. Both involved cultivating and maintaining partnerships with industry, professional societies, academic institutions, and STEM professionals.

Jill is an active member of the Marine Technology Society (MTS). She served on the MTS Board as the Vice President of Education and Research for 6 years. She currently serves as the Underwater Intervention (UI) Technical Program Committee Marine Education Track Chair and is a member of the MTS ROV and Education Committees. Jill is a 2020 recipient of an MTS Fellows Award, one of the society’s most distinguished achievements. In 2018, she was listed as one of the top ten “Ocean Influencers” by Marine Technology Reporter magazine. Jill has a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Penn State University and a Master’s degree in Oceanography and Coastal Sciences from Louisiana State University (LSU). During her Master’s degree program at LSU, Jill participated in research cruises that investigated hydrocarbon seep communities in the Gulf of Mexico using the Johnson Sea-Link and Alvin submersibles, which gave her an appreciation of how underwater technologies can be used to support science and exploration.
