MTS Releases September/October Journal

Message From the MTS Journal Editor
Alicia M. Mahon
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

The MTS Journal staff is taking several strategic and proactive steps to increase the  visibility, readership, and impact of the Journal. The new wave of open-access journals is revolutionizing knowledge and information exchange within the scientific community. Therefore, the MTS Journal now provides open access to archived Journal issues 13 months and older to both MTS and non-MTS members. To demonstrate the reach and impact of providing open-access issues, the MTS Journal May/June 2021 issue, “United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) and the Seabed 2030 Initiative,” was published as a fully open-access issue. In July 2021, the issue ranked in the top 100 out of more than 11,000 titles for number of  full-text downloads on Ingenta (the publication portal that archives MTS Journal issues online), ranking 21st with 1,422 downloads.

MTS is also partnering with the Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) on several professional society collaborations. In 2019, MTS and SUT announced that we have entered into a 3-year Memorandum of Agreement to explore ways to work together to the benefit of our collective membership.

In addition to launching the joint MTS/SUT Marine Technologist Certification program, the SUT Journal Underwater Technology has now merged with the MTS Journal (notice the co-branding on the cover of this MTSJ issue). The partnership between the two societies and the merging of the journals will facilitate international knowledge sharing and collaboration in pursuit of delivering better member benefits and supporting the exploration, understanding, and sustainable use of the ocean and its resources.
