MTS Committee Webinar: Applying Environmental Mitigation and Monitoring Lessons Learned to Future Marine Industrial Opportunities

With an emerging marine minerals industry, it is crucial to understand the impacts human activities have on marine life. There are limits to our knowledge and understanding of deep-sea ecosystems and habitats, which will make the development of effective monitoring and mitigation strategies challenging.
Join us for an insightful discussion on:

  • Current best management practices for protecting marine life during military/industrial activities
  • Lessons learned from at-sea naval activities and offshore wind farm development
  • Overview of existing monitoring and mitigation technologies

Our distinguished presenters will review current monitoring and mitigation strategies and discuss potential applications to other emerging marine industries.

Date and Time:

Wednesday, June 12, 2024 | 4:00 - 5:00 PM EDT

Presenters:

Dr. Kristen Ampela, HDR, Inc.

Dr. Ampela is a senior marine biologist at HDR, Inc. She has over 20 years of experience studying, monitoring, and mitigating the effects of human activities on vulnerable marine species, including seals, dolphins, whales, seabirds, intertidal algae and invertebrates, and coral reefs. Her current focus is on understanding, and mitigating, the impacts of offshore energy development and at-sea military activities on marine mammals.

Dr. Joseph Brodie, AKRF

Joseph Brodie is an environmental scientist with extensive experience in research, monitoring, and impacts mitigation technologies largely focused on the responsible development of offshore wind in the New York Bight and beyond. At AKRF, he works with clients to manage and conduct the studies and analyses necessary for large scale infrastructure projects to receive and comply with federal, state, and local permits, with a focus on offshore wind.
Prior to joining AKRF in 2022, he was Offshore Wind Research Lead and Director of Atmospheric Research at the Rutgers University Center for Ocean Observing Leadership, where he merged his passion for modeling with the observational technologies that enable skilled modeling to be done. He’s a member of American Clean Power’s Metocean Conditions Characterization Working Group as part of their Offshore Wind Technical Advisory Panel, and serves as Vice Chair of the Offshore Renewable Energy Committee of the Marine Technology Society. Dr. Brodie holds a B.S. in Meteorology from Rutgers University and a Ph.D. in Physical Ocean Science and Engineering from the University of Delaware.

Moderator:

Dr. Alex Barnard, Chair MTS Marine Mineral Resources Committee

Alex Barnard is a scientist, father, and educator. He has a PhD in Marine Geoscience from the University of Houston and works in both industry and academia. He is the founder of an online education company, and serves as a review board member for two academic journals.
