About Black Girls Dive Foundation
Black Girls Dive Foundation (BGDF) establishes space and opportunity to empower young ladies to explore their STEM identity through marine science and conservation, and SCUBA diving. BGDF is a designated 501c(3), volunteer-based, educational non-profit organization that was founded in 2017 in Maryland. Currently, there are local chapters operating in Maryland - Baltimore County and Baltimore City; Trenton, New Jersey, and Atlanta, Georgia.

Winners from the 2023 MATE ROV World Championship 

We are deeply saddened at the loss of the crew of the submersible Titan.  Our underwater community is close-knit and deeply connected; many of us worked with and knew those onboard.  We appreciate and extend our gratitude for the efforts of the hundreds of volunteers and professionals who worked tirelessly on the complex and difficult search. That numerous agencies and commercial partners, from multiple nations, rapidly responded and deployed cutting-edge technologies is a testament to the strength and cohesion of the maritime sector – and emblematic of the Mariner’s Code that connects all seafarers.  Along with the entire marine technology community, MTS leadership offers our sincere condolences and sympathies to the families and friends of the Titan's crew.

Formed in June 1963, the Marine Technology Society (MTS) stands stronger than ever six decades later.

In the early 1960’s, a group of business, academic, and government leaders recognized the need for a professional society to bring together scientists, engineers, and others interested in the rapidly growing fields of ocean technology and marine affairs. They convened a committee to establish the character, name, objectives, and basic policies of MTS – launched as a not-for-profit corporation in June of 1963. 

Our most pressing and complex ocean-based challenges demand solutions powered by investments in workforce, innovations in technology and advancements in data capture.

The San Diego Section of the Marine Technology Society would like to congratulate the 2023 Science Fair winners. We recognize these four outstanding high school students for their science and engineering projects displayed at this year's Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair (GSDSEF).

MTS is proud of the many members in Houston who contribute to the success of OTC. The MTS Board of Directors and many of our staff were thrilled to host them at our Member Reception. It was a pleasure to meet some of our newest members and see many familiar faces. 

The U.S. National Science Foundation issued a Request for Information, or RFI, to gather insights for the development of an investment roadmap for its Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships, or TIP, in accordance with the "CHIPS and Science Act" of 2022. 

Organizers of the International WorkBoat Show and the Underwater Intervention Conference and Exhibition (UI) announced that the two events would be co-located in New Orleans in 2023. The International WorkBoat Show is the largest business-to-business commercial marine expo in the United States. UI is the premier event for the entire underwater industry. 

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and the Marine Technology Society (MTS) have announced the launch of the Red Sea Section, the society's first section in the middle east. The section was established on January 9, 2023 at KAUST with the goal of facilitating communication between those interested in marine science and technology from inside and outside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

University of Arizona Professor achieves an underwater first – ‘camping’

Dr. James L. Cairns, Founder and Executive Director of the Cairns Foundation, and CEO of Abyssal Systems, Inc, is among the world-class inventors who have been selected as a 2023 Inductee to the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame. Cairns is the pioneer of underwater electrical/electronic fiber-optic connector technologies that allowed circuits to be successfully and seamlessly mated and de-mated reliably within the harsh environment of the deep ocean. His innovations revolutionized anti-submarine warfare and subsea surveillance, expanded the industry of ocean energy production, and significantly advanced the fields of Oceanography, Marine Geology and Seismology. He holds 62 U.S. patents and received the Marine Technology Society’s Compass-Rolex Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award and Lockheed Martin Award for Excellence in Marine Science and Engineering. In 2017, he was inducted into the Offshore Energy Center Hall of Fame for Pioneering Technology.

Ocean science and technology experts from around the world descended on Southampton last week for the biggest ever Ocean Business exhibition and conference.

Earlier this month I had the honor of joining a small group of ocean leaders for an intimate and invite only conversation focused on defining a collaborative future for marine priorities in the United States. That MTS was the only membership community at the table alongside the most senior executive leadership in the country spanning defense, diplomacy, ocean research, and environmental science is a testament to the reputation, talent, and richness of our MTS community.

The first annual Marine Technology Society New Jersey Student Section Research Symposium recently took place on Friday, April 14th at the Rutgers University Marine Field Station and Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve in Tuckerton, NJ. This symposium brought together over 25 undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty and staff from Rutgers University, Stockton University, Princeton University, and the New Jersey Institute of technology for a day of networking and student presentations.

Accurate ocean depths and seafloor topography are essential for navigation, coastal management, tsunami forecasting, telecommunications, offshore energy, understanding weather and climate, managing environmental changes, and so much more. But only 23% of the global ocean has been mapped using modern, high-resolution tools, leaving substantial gaps in our knowledge about our oceans. This lack of exploration is largely due to the high cost of accessing our oceans, which has traditionally been undertaken by large ships that are expensive to build and operate.

MTS is growing, our partnership with MATE is progressing and we look forward to bringing our teams together to expand our reach, leverage our collective partnerships and resources, and grow our missions. We will be collaborating closely at the upcoming MATE ROV World Championship competition taking place June 22-24 at the St. Vrain Valley School District in Longmont, Colorado.
