MTS Member Webinar: Funding High-Risk, High-Impact Marine Energy Technologies at ARPA-E

Description:

The U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency - Energy (ARPA-E) funds high-risk, high-impact energy R&D and prioritizes the commercialization of energy technologies. ARPA-E has invested more than $220M in innovative ocean technologies since 2016, including for U.S. seaweed aquaculture, direct ocean carbon capture technologies, low-cost floating offshore wind, hydrokinetic energy systems, and more.

The newest addition to ARPA-E's ocean portfolio is the Sensing Exports of Anthropogenic Carbon through Ocean Observation (SEA-CO2) program, in which ARPA-E has invested $37.4M for the development of new, scalable chemical oceanographic sensors and models. These will enable more accurate measurement of ocean carbon capture effectiveness and help to quantify the value of marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR) technologies.

In this session, we will discuss how ARPA-E supports marine innovators, the technological advancements of the SEA-CO2 program, and opportunities for potential funding and partnerships.

Speakers:

Dr. Simon Freeman serves as a Program Director at the ARPA-E. His focus is on maritime energy and environmental sensing technologies. Freeman previously worked as a civilian oceanographer for the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport. Freeman was Principal Investigator in the development of inflatable and bioinspired soft robotic systems for underwater vehicles, acoustic sensor design, new signal processing methods for acoustic sensing, detection and environmental exploitation, and pressure-tolerant technologies to enhance our access to the seabed. Freeman earned a B.E. with Honors in Mechanical Engineering and a B.S. in Marine Science from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and a Ph.D. in Oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Dan Rogers serves as a Tech-to-Market Advisor at ARPA-E, where he focuses on transformative, high-impact marine technologies to address our society's most pressing ocean-related energy and critical resource needs. Dan brings a background in underwater technology operation, engineering, and business development in the marine science and technology field. He supported dozens of deep-sea robotic missions across the globe as a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) pilot and mechanical engineer for NOAA's ocean exploration program and served as a technical lead for many of these missions. In his position at the Consortium for Ocean Leadership, Dan organized strategic convenings involving dozens of partners from across industry, government, and academic institutions, to capitalize on shared priorities and advance community-wide goals for ocean science, data, and technology.

Technical Focus: Marine Robotics; Offshore Wind; Marine Hydrokinetic Energy; Seaweed Aquaculture; Marine CDR
